‘The Square Bears’ Project Reflection

I think looking back at this project we as ‘The Wrong Shed Productions’ have achieved a great deal, we have successfully created a 5 track EP, a music video, promotional videos and the full marketing strategy which we have contributed to in different ways. The band overall are happy with the product that I have delivered which is the music video. For this I took into account everything the band had said for the editing process, I kept the style of the ‘Noir’ setting they wanted and from doing some research I found what this was in order to be able to create our own version. Respectively I would say this is LO1, LO2 and LO3, I have done my research and shown how companies created music videos, the processes they go through and the final outcome. I have looked at production techniques for the film style of ‘Noir’ and implemented them into my study, this process has also involved good liaison skills with the band which I feel that I have accomplished. I have developed my skills in Adobe Premier Pro to create a professional artefact.

I created album artwork using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, to keep consistency I chose to use a primary and secondary font, the pictures were also black and white which kept to the style of the music video. Throughout the process I have created teasers which aided in the marketing of the products, when we went to see the client perform I took a video of one of their songs, and turned this into a 30 second promo. I did this with all the songs, however I changed the narrative of each using different parts from the music video, placing a different part of the other tracks behind the video. I did this to promote all the products to the pubic, this technique drip-fed the music video to them in small parts but also new songs, this gets people excited for the release of the final product. I placed these videos on social media, as this is where they work the best. These are a contributing factor for LO3 and LO4.

There are some things which could have been improved on, I would say the biggest factor that affected us would be communication, we were always in contact with the band sending them updates on all of our aspects but it seems like they didn’t want to tell us the problems. As of now there are no problems with the final release of the music video and all of the band are happy with this. The issue was with the EP, Oliver sent updates regularly and the band were happy, but a couple of days before release there was a sudden contradiction from the band, the issue has been resolved now thankfully and our material has been released. If I were to repeat this process this would be something to clear up at the start, that we are the employee’s and they can tell us what they want from the product. I do feel that overall we have created a successful product which reflects all the hard work we have put in throughout the project.

Album Artwork and Release Teaser Artwork (LO4)

This is the album artwork, I have used a wide range of techniques to create this. First of all I began in photoshop where I took a collage of pictures from the music video and put them together, keeping them neat I used the same margins for the top of the pictures. I used two fonts, to keep consistency, the lead font is the square font and the secondary the handwritten font. As you can see I rebranded the logo, changing it from their current to an updated version using the two fonts. I researched into how big a CD cover was, so I knew the exact size to make these. As we are not printing and everything is going on soundcloud/Itunes, this will be for future use when The Square Bears decide to branch out even more. There are a list of acknowledgments on the back, this is standard for any CD cover, this lets people know who did what in the process. Also I used our company name ‘The Wrong Shed Productions’ in the bottom corner of the artwork, I did this as it builds a landmark image for our company, this is also something else recording companies/publishers undertake in order to let people know this was their project and where to get music like this in the future.

Final Artwork (Back) Final Artwork (Front)

Below is the teaser artwork. This was released on Friday 11th December, a few days before the launch we did this because it is not too far away from the launch (14th December) and it lets people have a few days to get excited about it, too far away from the launch and this could slip from peoples minds. I went for the primary and secondary fonts again on this and also kept to the black and white theme. This was to build a brand identity for the square bears.

Final Music Video (LO3)

The final video is complete, we released this on December 10th. The release was announced whilst the band were on Siren FM. I did post on the bands Facebook about this but if I were to do one thing again it would be this, I would have posted straight after the announcement.

However the video went down very well with the public via Facebook, so far our public reach for the video is over 2,000 people! This is something successful that has come out of the video, this is the highest rating we have had through any post.

The final music video is posted below. All the editing was carried out by me, this includes the black and white effect that is seen, I chose black and white as there was supposed to be a sense of ‘Comedy Noir’ to the music video so this was the best way to stick to conventions.

The story follows the band throughout a busy day before a gig, someone loses their guitar, while the others get into trouble at Riley’s. It is a tongue in cheek music video with a funny narrative and a well executed performance.

Guest Lecture: Ken Blair – Music Producer

The lecture with Ken was very interesting, he ran through a lot of aspects of his job and employability factors. Ken is a classical music producer and owner of BMP: The Sound Recording Company, based in Lincoln at ‘Sparkhouse Studios’ on the Universities campus. A lot of travel is involved with job, so one day he will be in London and the next a completely different place! Also a few times a year he goes over to America to work in a studio. Ken detailed the kind of differenced between his recording and popular music recording. Most of his kit consists of AKG-c414’s and other bits of kit which are set up to get more of a room sound, rather than an up-close instrument sound. However, if there are certain parts he wants to highlight in the music he would use spot mic’s on those instruments. This is the main difference between popular and classical music recording.

In the future I could apply these methods to my work, so this lecture has been extremely useful.
